We Already Have the Money for Solving the Climate Crisis
How to beat swords into plowshares, and spears into pruning hooks. It’s called military defence budget and it is time to go shopping
Let’s set up a thought experiment. Imagine we treat the climate crisis for what it really is; a threat to our survival from which we need to defend.
Right now, we are allocating close to 2 trillion US dollars per year to have guns and cannons pointed at each other. Two trillions just so that boys can play war games with real weapons. It’s called defence budget, but who are we defending against?
What if we decide to spend that money on what is really threatening us?
Something like the climate change.
And suppose we go easy on this one. We don’t want our boys to cry when we take away their precious toys, do we? We start by taking off 10% the first year, and we increase that by another 10% each next year to fully transition in ten years.
Ten percent of 2 trillion is 200 billion, just the first year. That is a pretty thick wallet and let’s see what we can buy for that. To be strategic about it, we should first identify the problems.
