Thank you for your comprehensive response. I speak as an architect, and although I don't practice architecture anymore I still follow the field. My hunch is that replacing at least some amount of construction with "ethical wood" instead of concrete would be beneficial for the environment. At least untill we find a carbon neutral substitute for cement. Especially residential buildings would be much more pleasant to live in. If I was to build a house for myself I would most likely choose timber. Of course, the scale of cutting down should be regulated on national or even international level. Not too much, not too agresively.
Where I live (shout-west of Slovenia) we have a lot of forrests and all kinds of it too. A huge amount of oak was cut down centuries ago for the creation of Venice in Italy. Those hills were later on somewhat eroded and are now being regrown by pine trees, much faster than one would think. So farmers took matters into their own hands and are now cutting down oaks to create larger pasture surfaces. Most of the wood ends up as heating material. Which is a pitty on both ends.
