Schools Are Closed and It Is Not a Bad Thing

Children are not in a coma after all

As the Coronavirus continues to storm across the Europe many schools are now closed for the third or fourth month in a row. I can only imagine how hard this must be on their parents. It’s tough, I get it. However; the argument for reopening usually focuses on the “missed education” and learning, some even go as far as saying that this shall be a “lost generation.” So let’s focus on that.

Sidenote:
I’ve spent an absurd amount of my lifetime in schools. First as a student and then as an art mentor to almost everyone; from small children to the elderly. I ended my teaching career as a University assistant at Faculty of Architecture (Ljubljana) where I spent two years teaching digital artistry and some basic architecture. For twelve years, from 2001 to 2013, I’ve organised or have been teaching countless courses, summer camps, classes, workshops, etc. I also occasionally work as an outside adviser to National Education Institute of the Republic of Slovenia where I try to inspire teachers for a more enlightened view on education. Although learning is still somewhat of a mystery I dare to say I do know a few things on how schools (should) work and more importantly how knowledge is transmited.
