I've had a similar experience, and let me offer you some of my reflections. I had an extreme germophobic OCD experience in 2004-6, which took me years to overcome. The recovery was so successful that I was ready to eat from the ground in the middle of Marakesh, if necessary. LOL But then COVID-19 happened, and for the first three weeks, my OCD relapsed. I washed and rewashed laundry just because it had been in proximity to "contaminated" objects (objects purchased after the start of the pandemic). But that somehow disappeared because I had to compromise or turn myself into a full-time sanitizer. I still do a lot of redundant disinfection today, but not out of fear or an OCD-like compulsion. I do it out of a sense of responsibility.

And this is, I think, the critical decision; what motivates you? Fear or knowing what's right (scientifically and morally). The former is pathological, and the latter is a sign of an adult personality. Conversely, refusing it is childish and immature.
