It is not so black and white. Having a homestead is a huge advantage in any kind of crisis, especially this one. Before Covid planting a small vegetable garden and fruit trees was merely my hobby for me. When the pandemic and the lockdowns started it often became my only source of fresh vegetables. This made quaranteene A LOT easier to bare. Of course, my garden is too small to grow everyhting on my own (and I also lack time to work on it), but it is obviously MUCH better than nothing. I can always trade some surplus with neighbours or buy extra from larger farms. In that regard I do agree community is crucial.
Furthermore; my great aunt still lives in a village where every household is practically a self-sustainable farm, at least in terms of food. Of course the pandemic impacted them to, but nothing like it was for city folks. Compared to them they have barely noticed it. So I really can't imagine going through the last 18 months in a city. It must be a hell.
