If you're from Sri Lanka, you probably know better than me how the traps for monkeys work. A cage containing sugar cubes with a hole large enough for a monkey's hand to fit in, but too small for a monkey's fist to come out. That might be the situation here. We don't want to let go of the goddies of the "developed" society, even when we know they are going to ruin us. It is the same psychology as with addiction and withdraw.
