I Wasn’t Scared of AI, Until Now
Apple Vision Pro headset and its horrors
Two days ago, Apple introduced their new device, Apple Vision Pro, the first serious virtual reality goggles targeted at a wider audience. What they offer is, by all accounts, the most immersive virtual or mixed reality experience available. To achieve this goal, they are packed with technology that seems to come from a sci-fi movie rather than an actual company.
Mixed reality has many potential applications that are genuinely interesting and worth exploring. Imagine surgeons or technicians having real-time AI assistance during their work. They could look up information in medical books or manuals while performing surgery or repairing complex machinery. Many other fields of work would also benefit. However, we all know that this is not the primary reason these headsets are being developed. If the company wants to make serious money, they need to target the masses of regular people who will not use them for heart transplants or repairing circuit boards.
The ultimate aim is total and complete immersion in the world of mindless entertainment, another step closer into the matrix. It is the next thing after having your face glued to a smartphone (and probably the last before a neural implant). Now you literally stick your head into it.
