I think that the western critics of communism are too focused on Stalin and the pathological extreme he produced. Meanwhile a much more humane versions existed in Yugoslavia and Czechoslovakia. Here in Slovenia, Yugonostalgia is still a real and qute common condition.

Many times I wonder what would happen if Soviet tanks didn flood Prague & Bratislava in 1968 and the softening of the system would continue as planed. What kind of a state would that result into?
