I still think nuclear is the way to go. Modern technology and the experience we've gathered from past mistakes can provide safety that is several magnitudes higher than in the past. I can't understand why we didn't start building more powerplants in the early 2000s (was it just political lobying on the part of oil industry?). It would buy us a lot of time to figure out the problems with renewables that you write about.
