How to Cope with Covid Fatigue
Notes from a marathon runner
While the first wave in Spring 2020 was characterised by fear and surprisingly high levels of solidarity, our defences begin to fall during the last months. Many simply don’t give a fuck anymore, refuse to follow the guidelines and the numbers soar. But this is a situation we can prepare for. Here’s a marathon runner’s perspective on fatigue.
At the moment of writing my country, Slovenia, is at the very top of Covid-19 mortality worldwide. Although our share of conspiracy theorists, freedom fighters and other idiots is no smaller than any place else, the vast majority of those who don’t comply with the general health guidelines are less militaristic and simply too tired to carry on. I know this feeling, I have known it for a while now. I experienced it with every marathon I ever ran.
The Great Wall
You’ve heard about it. It’s the great wall of Marathon. It happens at arround 32th km. But you have to experience it in order to understand what it is all about. Some literally collapse, the most well trained experience only slightly heavier legs, but even the greatest runners still feel a marked difference.
