CLIMATE CHANGE
COP26 is Just Political Tourism
It is not about climate
It took me years to realise that most of what people engage in has nothing to with its declarative purpose. Often their actions are just means to another end entirely.
Glasgow is not just a climate conference, it is a social gathering of and for the people who gather on such events. From one conference to another they meet, they bond, they make friendships, and promise to meet at the next one. Obviously, an improved climate isn’t their priority.
There are three main categories of attendees:
- big boss politicians,
- delegates,
- and protesters.
Each has their game to play and their own stake to defend. But that is a subject of another article entirely. I want to focus on the social aspect for now.
Politicians are also social animals; they meet, they share drinks and most importantly they crave attention which they get at such events. They also like luxury travel, fancy hotels, dinner parties, lines of cocaine, hookers, and so on… And they are actually paid to be there!
Much better than their boring office work, right?
