Do We Even Deserve to Survive?
“Don’t Look Up” should be classified as a documentary. A (spoiler free) review.
Yesterday I finally got to see the Netflix movie Don’t Look Up. I’ve been looking forward ever since the first trailers surfaced, and boy did I like it.
Basically, it’s Deep Impact with a social update. The introductory scenes of comet discovery (by a student & a pro astronomer duo) play out almost exactly the same, but more on that some other time. Something is more important right now.
This movie, more than any documentary or news report, portrays our catastrophic response to a crisis, be it the Covid-19 pandemic or climate change. You pick. It is the same.
Without giving away too much I say this: this movie has it all; scientists are desperately trying to warn humanity of the impending danger, clownish politicians see it as election leverage (at best), news media spins it into entertainment, billionaires buy politicians into their scheme, influencers are stressed about it and try to sell it their way, the internet turns it into yet another viral meme joke, and people divide into ideological tribes. A few panic, some disbelieve and most ignore it altogether. They just go on with their daily chores.
