"Being good enough" is what stops most people, I think. But still; our standards vary, and the level of skill many of my friends consider "good enough" is usually nowhere near good enough for me. I think it is helpful to have a mild OCD, to pursue perfection on its own (beyond mere utility). Nothing beats obsession. On the other side, it is fair to ask where does this need for perfection come from. For many it is some sort of emotional compensation. Pathological perfectionists can be pain in the ass for everyone else, while emotionally balanced people lack proper motivation to enter their land.
It is also true that the further you go the harder it gets to find role models who are truly better than you.
