As a photographer, I can relate and probably offer a different perspective. Taking photos and recording videos is an essential part of my traveling experience and something I enjoy a lot. I could hardly travel without it. I remember being in Sicily and having my camera broken. I was looking through the window of a bus, almost in tears from all the colors and beauty that couldn't be captured now. :)
In a way, a camera allows me to be actually more immersed with the time & place of my traveling because I have to observe the light, landscape, compose the images, etc. It is a device that connects me with the country and its people on a deeper level. It is almost an anthropological instrument, if you will.
But I do get your point, though. With time, I did learn how to put it down and simply enjoy the view (or a meal with the locals) and just be there. As I mature I try to get the best of both worlds.
Perhaps this youth you're describing needs to go into one extrem to learn their lesson. Let them grow.
