As a European I've been always baffled with this US obsession with "moving out". For centuries children simply inherited houses from their parents. In modern terms: you don't need to buy new shit (like kitchen appliences, furniture...).

Although some of it could be atributed to pioneering spirit of settlers in US, I came to believe that this moving out obsession is largely fueled by consumerism and is just another way to implement planned obsolesence.
