It’s 2019, and you have about $6,000 to $7,000 sitting in your bank account, collecting dust. Leica has just launched its new SL2 camera — do you buy it? Better yet, it’s 2025, and the price has dropped to a mere $3,000. Is it still worth a trip to the bank?

Well, that depends. For most cameras, the decision is based primarily on technical capabilities, but with Leica, it’s just as much about you, the user.

Let’s find out why.

The Technical Mumbo-Jumbo

Let’s get rid of the formalities first. The Leica SL2 is a professional full-frame mirrorless camera introduced in November 2019 as the successor to the Leica SL. It features a 47.3-megapixel CMOS sensor paired with the Maestro III processor, delivering high-resolution images with a wide dynamic range and a decent low-light performance. The camera supports up to 20 fps continuous shooting with an electronic shutter and 10 fps with a mechanical shutter. It incorporates a five-axis in-body image stabilization system. The SL2 is also capable of 5K video recording at 30 fps and 10-bit 4:2:2 output via HDMI. It utilizes the L-Mount system, making it compatible with a wide range of Leica, Panasonic, and Sigma lenses.
